He too is expected back soon, and he could be a valuable starter if healthy. LH James Paxton (Injured list): After a season lost to injury, he incurred a Grade 1 hamstring strain in his first Grapefruit League outing. If there is any value in the righthander, it’s this: He tied for the major league lead in starts last year (33). Pivetta got bullied by the AL East last year, the division teeing off on him for a 6.72 ERA. RH Nick Pivetta: Perhaps a starter for the Sox, but probably a reliever for a lot of other clubs. ![]() He doesn’t wow you with stuff, but his pitch mix works and he knows how to get outs and keep his team in games. RH Kutter Crawford: He earned a spot on the Opening Day roster following an accomplished spring. The young righthander, the Sox’ prized possession, comes with high hopes that he can make an immediate impact after an impressive showing during his first taste of big league competition late last season. And, like Whitlock, he should be back in the mix soon. RH Brayan Bello (Injured list): Like Whitlock, he will begin the season on the IL after dealing with forearm tightness at the start of camp. They will give him a chance to be a full-time starter but his future and real value might be in the bullpen. The Sox brought him along slowly this spring, ensuring that he was healthy. RH Garrett Whitlock (Injured list): He will start the season on the injured list after undergoing hip surgery last year, but he could be back for the second or third time through the rotation. If there’s any starter the Sox might need to survive in the competitive AL East, it’s Sale. He made it through the spring unscathed and will be on the Opening Day active roster for the first time since 2019. LH Chris Sale: “Humpty Dumpty got put back together,” Sale said during Winter Weekend in January. He is some years removed from his Cy Young days, but, if healthy, he will be a quality starter with the experience to navigate a lineup effectively. RH Corey Kluber: A veteran who Cora said “knows how to pitch” will get the ball on Opening Day. ![]() The Boston Red Sox continued Spring Training workouts at their Fenway South Complex. Myers, FL: Red Sox pitcher Corey Kluber is pictured in the bullpen area. You can expect Yoshida to hit in the middle of the order, and he just might be the team’s most complete hitter.Ġ2-17-23: Ft. LF Masataka Yoshida: The Sox’ biggest free agent signing of the offseason put the baseball world on notice with a record 13 RBIs in the World Baseball Classic for Japan, the winner of the tournament. Duvall saw limited action last year because of a wrist injury but had 38 homers for the Marlins and Braves in 2021. ![]() He has elite pull-side power, which should benefit him with the Green Monster. He will be the primary right fielder, a more demanding position at Fenway, after spending most of his tenure with the Sox in left.ĬF Adam Duvall: He will be the starting center fielder, but Alex Cora acknowledged that they will manage the 34-year-old veteran’s workload. RF Alex Verdugo: He has been a league-average player since being traded to the Sox prior to the 2020 season, but he is looking to make that next leap. ![]() Alex Verdugo swings over from left field to right field this season.

I asked Louis Ferla, CEO of Vacheron Constantin, and got an on-the-record confirmation that anyone can walk in the door and commission a piece (feel free to point to this article if you hear otherwise). And unlike with Audemars Piguet or Patek Philippe, you don't have to be a brand mega-client or best friends with the CEO to buy or commission a Les Cabinotiers timepiece. But a number of the pieces created by Les Cabinotiers exist in the public sphere, like the Homage To Peter Paul Rubens that I photographed earlier this year. These watches are all "price on request" (trust me, we all asked multiple times). Okay, I don't mean that from a financial standpoint. While all the "Holy Trinity" watchmaking maisons allow pièce unique productions and commissions, none are as accessible as Vacheron. Unfasten your watch one evening, and find it a few days later, still on time. That's part of what makes Les Cabinotiers so remarkable. Is Barthes telling us a lie in order to reveal a greater truth (about photography, about the permeability of truth and falsehood)? If so, it would link Barthes’s great reflection on photography to Walter Benjamin’s partially fictional Little History of Photography, which Barthes would have read in 1977 in a French translation in Nouvel Observateur. Perhaps, she speculates, the famous Winter Garden photograph of Barthes’s mother never even existed. Margaret Olin goes even further, proposing that the invisibility of the Winter Garden Photograph is a sign that Camera Lucida is meant to be read as a novel, rather than as a work of non-fiction. In that sense, the photograph of Barthes’s mother must be made an absent presence in order to maintain the deconstructive dynamic that animates the whole book. With Camera Lucida structured in every aspect in binary terms (as in the impossible opposition of studium and punctum), the missing Winter Garden Photograph has its doppelgänger in the Polaroid photograph by Daniel Boudinet that Barthes takes the trouble to reproduce in colour but never discusses. Indeed, a number of commentators have suggested that, just as Barthes decided to “’derive’ all Photography (its ‘nature’)” from this one absent photograph, there too, in that photograph’s retraction, should inquiring readers seek the essence of Barthes’s book. ![]() Given the care with which the whole book has been composed, this effect is surely no accident. Empathizing with the grief-stricken author, we find ourselves crying over a photograph that isn’t even there. It’s a brilliant rhetorical manoeuvre, inviting every reader to project their own image of a lost loved one into the void at the heart of his text. The corners were blunted from having been pasted into an album, the sepia print had faded, and the picture just managed to show two children standing together at the end of a little wooden bridge in a glassed-in conservatory, what was called a Winter Garden in those days” But then, despite proposing that “something like an essence of the Photograph floated in this particular picture,” he refuses to reproduce it, claiming that, for us, “it would be nothing but an indifferent picture.” Roland Barthes describes this photograph, the so-called Winter Garden Photograph of his recently-deceased mother, in considerable detail in his book Camera Lucida: “The photograph was very old. 1981, 119p, trade paperback, covers bumped/scuffed, binding tight, text highlighted-ENGLISH LANGUAGE-35.00 for all 10, extra shipping for ths multiple book order. One of the most famous photographs in the history of photography has never been seen by its many interlocutors.
